Bucharest - the capital city of Romania

The town was first mentioned in a document in 1495 as residence of the ruler of Wallachia, Vlad Tepes. But the settlement had an older history, going back to the 14th century. The founding of Bucharest is traditionally ascribed to a peasant named Bucur, but no record of the city exists prior to the late Middle Ages. Attacks by Tatars and Turks restricted its growth before the 17th century. Between the 17th - 19th (beginning with 1698) centuries it was the capital of Wallachia and in 1862 it became the capital of Romania.

The city has grown rapidly, its size doubling since World

War II. The earliest city was founded on the rising ground on the left bank of the Dāmbovita.

This initially mostly rural settlement was replaced, beginning in the 1860s, by an elegant capital with French-inspired architecture that entitled it to be known as the Little Paris.

Bucharest has always prided itself in being a very hospitable city. We strive not only to accomplish a pleasant visit to this metropolis, but also to make it an experience worth remembering. For a visitor who is going to stay only a few days it is important to be able to find his way around current cultural programs, tourists attractions, shops and restaurants quickly and easily. There are a rich and satisfying variety of things to be seen and done by visitors - museums, theatre, exhibitions, concert halls, parks and monuments that still talk about its history. With some major exceptions, Bucharest has managed to maintain the architectural symbols of the past in the midst of its transformations.

Try to discover and understand its many aspects and you will surely find its charm. Our desire is to make sure that you will always remember your stay in Bucharest with pleasure.
