Govora Monastery

The name of Matei Basarab, the greatest founder of churches in Wallachia, is also connected to the Monastery of Govora, which lies to the edge of a forest, 6km away to the balneal resort bearing the same name. The real founders of this monastery are not known. It was restored by Radu the Great in 1492. One and a half century later, Matei Basarab repaired the whole settlement and its attached wings again and installed a printing machine. As a result many beautifully decorated books were printed here, among them Govora Book of Laws, the first book of laws ever printed in Romanian language
