Viscri

VISCRI is probably the only fortress in Romania protecting a church built in the 12th century which still exists. You can reach the fortress traveling by train from Brasov to Feldioara or by car taking the national road 13 (16 km). In case train was your choice you shouldn't be afraid you have to walk for hours to reach it. The railway station is near the hill where the citadel stands. It was built on a rock on the southeast side of the commune. Seen from the exit of the railway station the citadel does not look very impressive, but rather small. However when you are inside you will be surprised to notice how huge the walls are.

Most of the historians believe the citadel was built by the Teutonic knights, who lived in here for fourteen years while they were residing in Tara Barsei. The style used at the building entitles them to maintain this idea as the citadel is built in square form being surrounded by protective towers. On the southern side you still can see the traces of the old gate. The main tower has the view over the village and has 8 up to 10 m high. From the inside looking down you can actually see the foundation of the chapel built in Roman style and the ruins of a crypt probably used after the 13th century as a cellar for the prisoners.

During the invasions of the Tartars the villagers used the citadel as hiding place. But you should know there is historians who believe the community built the citadel after the retreat of the Teutonic knights. They say the citadel is too small for being a residence.
